Kurigram Freedom Day celebrated with joyousness

RANGPUR, Dec 6, 2020 (BSS) – The freedom fighters with people from all walks of life today celebrated the Kurigram Freedom Day-2020 with limited scale programmes turning the district town joyous.

The Kurigram district unit of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad (BMS) with district administration and different socio-cultural, professional and political organisations chalked out programmes marking the glorious day for the people of Kurigram.

The programmes were arranged strictly abiding by health directives of the government in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to prevent community transmission of the deadly virus.

The celebration began with the placing of wreaths at the Victory Monument of Independence paying rich tribute to martyrs of the War of Liberation followed by bringing out of victory rally and discussion.

Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Md. Rezaul Karim and Superintendent of Police Md. Muhibul Islam Khan with local freedom fighters inaugurated the celebration with placing wreaths at the Victory Monument of Independence and leading a rally on the streets.

After parading the local streets, participants in the victory rally arrived in the Victory Monument of Independence and participated in a discussion arranged there with Former Kurigram district unit Commander of BMS Sirajul Islam Tuku in the chair.

Freedom fighters Abdul Hye, Bir Pratik, Harun-Ar-Rashid Lal and Aminul Islam, General Secretary of Kurigram District Sports Association Sayed Hasan Loban, General Secretary of District Shilpokola Academy Rasheduzzaman Babu, among others, addressed.

The speakers said the triumphant freedom fighters, led by Company Commander Abdul Hye, Bir Pratik, of Sub-sector No-1 under Sector-6, bravely liberated Kurigram town by defeating and driving away the Pakistani occupation forces on December 6, 1971.

Harun-Ar-Rashid Lal said the freedom fighters started conducting ceaseless attacks on the Pakistani forces in Kurigram town from all sides from December 1, 1971 destroying moral courage of the occupation army.

“The occupation forces had to suffer uncountable casualties in those battles with the freedom fighters round the clock, especially on December 4 and December 5, making the triumph quite evident,” Lal said.

Sirajul Islam Tuku said the Pakistani occupation forces started leaving Kurigram by train since December 6 in the morning with firing in the air after failing to sustain the repeated fierce attacks of the freedom fighters amid heavy air strikes of the Indian allied forces.

Hundreds common people gathered on the victory march to welcome the triumphant freedom fighters who entered Kurigram town under the leadership of Abdul Hye, Bir Pratik, at 4 pm on December 6.

“Later, with thousands of the common people and freedom fighters, Company Commander Abdul Hye hoisted the flag of Independent Bangladesh on the overhead water tank in the just liberated Kurigram town,” Tuku added.
