Coronavirus toll at 1100 GMT Wednesday

PARIS, Dec 2, 2020 (BSS/AFP) – The novel coronavirus has killed at least 1,482,240 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT on Wednesday.

At least 63,865,770 cases have been registered. Of these, at least 40,695,700 are now considered recovered.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

On Tuesday, 13,186 new deaths and 625,301 new cases were recorded worldwide. Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were the United States with 2,562 new deaths, followed by Mexico with 825 and Italy with 785.

The United States is the worst-affected country with 270,691 deaths from 13,726,306 cases. At least 5,226,581 people have been declared recovered.

After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 173,817 deaths from 6,386,787 cases, India with 138,122 deaths from 9,499,413 cases, Mexico with 106,765 deaths from 1,122,362 cases, and the United Kingdom with 59,051 deaths from 1,643,086 cases.

The country with the highest number of deaths compared to its population is Belgium with 145 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Peru with 109, Spain 97 and Italy 93.

China — excluding Hong Kong and Macau — has to date declared 86,551 cases, including 4,634 deaths and 81,649 recoveries.

Latin America and the Caribbean overall has 450,015 deaths from 13,103,601 cases, Europe 420,752 deaths from 18,594,535 infections, and the United States and Canada 282,856 deaths from 14,107,330 cases.

Asia has reported 195,866 deaths from 12,466,001 cases, the Middle East 79,501 deaths from 3,376,186 cases, Africa 52,308 deaths from 2,187,775 cases, and Oceania 942 deaths from 30,349 cases.

As a result of corrections by national authorities or late publication of data, the figures updated over the past 24 hours may not correspond exactly to the previous day’s tallies.
