4 Neo-JMB members held in C’nawabganj

DHAKA, Nov 29, 2020 (BSS) – A team of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested four leading active members of the of banned militant outfit Neo-Jamatul Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB) from Chapainawabganj district of Rajshahi division.

The arrested are Badrul Islam alias Tareq, 35, Abdul Karim, 25, Mohammad Azim Safiullah Sumon, 36, and Monirul Islam, 20.

This information has been given in a press release of DMP today saying that the Counter Terrorism Investigation Division of CTTC arrested them in a special operation at Zila sadar area of Chapainawabganj last Friday.

They were arrested in a case filed with Darussalam Police Station in city’s Mirpur area last Saturday.

According to CTTC sources, the arrested were leading members of the new JMB.

They admitted in the preliminary interrogation that they took oath of the new JMB through Sohail Mahfuz, a JMB leader who was accused in multiple cases including the Gulshan Holy Artisan case.

They joined the new JMB in late 2017 by taking ‘Bayat’ through Badrul Islam, who was arrested on the banks of the Mahananda River next to the Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital, and Mohsin, who was detained in India already.

The CTTC has already arrested three more people in connection with the DMP’s Darussalam police station case.

Police were able to arrest a total of seven people in the case.

The other two accused in the case were arrested by Indian police from West Bengal’s Howrah district in June 2019. They are now in Indian jails.

CTTC sources further said that the arrested persons were traveling to India illegally.

Their ideologues had contacts with trained terrorists in West Bengal, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh in India.

Their aim was to coordinate with Indian extremist terrorists in Chapainawabganj in Bangladesh, West Bengal in India and parts of Uttar Pradesh in India under the leadership of a competent “Ameer” form the ‘Khilafat Hind’.
