Tough actions against people involved in elephant killings: Shahab

DHAKA, Nov 25, 2020 (BSS) – Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Shahab Uddin today said exemplary action will be taken against the officials and employees who failed to prevent the killing of wild elephants.

“The present government is working relentlessly for the protection of the environment and biodiversity, so the legal action would be taken against those involved in killing wild elephants and the officers who would not prevent those killing,” he said.

He said this while addressing a monthly meeting virtually from his official residence in the city to review the implementation progress of the Ministry’s Annual Development Program (ADP) for the fiscal year 2020-21.

Deputy Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Begum Habibun Nahar, Secretary Ziaul Hasan NDC, Additional Secretary (Administration) took part in the meeting, among others, said a press release.

The Forest Minister called upon the authorities concerned to intensify the awareness program to prevent the public from killing wild elephants. He said the government should provide adequate compensation to the people affected by wild elephants.

“All necessary steps should be taken for the safety of all other types of wildlife including elephants,” he added

Chief Forest Conservator Amir Hossain Chowdhury said elephant habitat has been destroyed and divided due to construction of Rohingya habitat and implementation of various development projects. Their long-known way of life has also been ruined. As a result, wild elephants get lost or try to enter human paddy fields in search of food.

As a result, local people are being killed by entangling power lines or other attacks.
