Flood situation likely to worsen in north by tomorrow

DHAKA, July 7, 2018 (BSS) – The flood situation is likely to worsen in low-laying areas of the country’s northern districts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Jamalpur and Sirajganj by tomorrow morning as the Brahmaputa-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma rivers may continue rising.

However, the flood situation at some places of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts may continue improving as the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in the northeastern region are likely to continue falling in the next 48 hours, said a Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) release here today.

The Brahmaputa-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma rivers are in the rising trend while the rivers of Upper Meghna basin and South Eastern Hilly basin are in the falling trend, the release added.

According to the release, water levels at 49 river stations monitored by FFWC have marked rise while 43 stations recorded fall. Among the 94 monitored stations, two river stations have been registered steady while water levels at seven stations are flowing above the danger level.

The water levels of the Surma is flowing 38 cm, 18 cm and 47 cm above the danger level at Kanaighat, Sylhet and Sunamganj stations while water level of the Old Surma is flowing 66 cm above the danger level at Derai station.

The water level of the Kushiyara is flowing 8 cm above the danger level at Sherpur-Sylhet station while water level of the Jamuna is flowing 18 cm above the danger level at Kazipur station.

Besides, the water level of Someswari is flowing 13 cm above the danger level at Kalmakanda station.
