40-day employment generation programme begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Nov 22, 2020 (BSS) – The government has arranged a 40-day employment generation programme for the hardcore and the seasonal unemployed people in all the seven upazilas of the district.

District Relief and Rehabilitation office sources said a total of 28, 916 day and farm laborers’ has been brought under the programme.

Of them, some 4402 daily wage earners from Sadar upazila were brought under the programme, 5631 from Sundarganj upazila, 3899 from Sadullapur upazila, 2917 from Palashbari upazila, 5751 from Gobindaganj upazila, 3761 from Saghata upazila and 2555 from Fulchhari upazila.

The objective of the programme is to assist the poor, particularly the day and farm laborers of the district, in overcoming their poverty and job crisis like situation during the lean period.

All the day and farm labourers have been engaged in implementing different development projects in rural areas of the district.

The project works include construction and reconstruction of katcha roads (clay roads), bridges, culverts, earth filling and excavation and re-excavation of derelict ponds and canals and removing water hyacinth from different water bodies, sources said.

Each of the workers would get Tk 200 per day as wage from the programme that would continue till starting the fully harvest of T-Aman paddy in the district, they said.

On Saturday like other 6 upazilas of the district, the daily wage earners started their development works in Saghata upzila in the district.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohiuddin Jahangir formally inaugurated the work in the upazila through cutting soil with a spade as the chief guest.

Upazila Project Implementation Officer Engineer Mithun Kundu and public representatives including beneficiaries were present on the occasion.

Talking to BSS, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer AKM Idris Ali said the development works are going on under the direct supervision of respective upazila administrations and local government bodies.
