Ten feared killed after boat capsizes in Lake Victoria
NAIROBI, Nov. 18, 2020 (BSS/XINHUA) — Ten people are feared dead after a boat capsized in Lake Victoria near Honge Beach in Bondo, Western Kenya, officials said on Wednesday.
Elly Odhiambo Masinde, chairman of the Beach Management Unit, said the boat capsized Tuesday night while headed for Uganda from Bondo in Siaya County.
Masinde said the boat had 20 people on board and was transporting maize and bananas to Usenge beach when it capsized. He said ten other people who included nine adults and one child were rescued by fishermen who were on a routine fishing expedition at the time of the incident, noting that they suspect the boat was hit by strong winds.
“The search for the bodies is ongoing and we are asking for help from the government,” Masinde said.
He added the capsized boat which was carrying traders mostly from the neighboring country of Uganda regularly transports food items to Usenge Beach.
The search of those missing went on Wednesday morning amid lack of equipment to enhance the exercise.
