Tribunal to hand down verdict in DU student rape case tomorrow

DHAKA, Nov 18, 2020 (BSS)-The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 will hand down the verdict in the case filed over the rape of a Dhaka University in the city’s Kurmitola in January this year.

On November 12, Judge Begum Mosammat Quamrunnahar of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 of Dhaka fixed the date for the verdict in presence of lone accused Majnu after conclusion of arguments from both prosecution and defence.

On January 5, the DU student was raped while she was walking from Kurmitola bus stop to a friend’s house near Shewra Rail Gate in Dhaka around 7:30pm after getting off a university bus.

On January 6, the girl’s father filed the case with Cantonment Police Station, accusing unknown people. The case was transferred to the DB on the same day.

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested 30-year-old Majnu from Shewra area on January 8.

On January 16, Mojnu confessed committing the crime before a Dhaka court.

Earlier, Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) submitted a charge-sheet against Majnu to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) court on March 16.

The incident had caused shockwaves and triggered massive protests by students and humanitarian organizations across the country.
