Court scraps bail pleas for Erfan Selim, bodyguard in arms case

DHAKA, Nov 15, 2020 (BSS) – A court here today scrapped bail pleas filed by suspended Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) ward-30 Councilor Erfan Salim and his bodyguard Mohammad Zahid in a case lodged over possessing illegal arms.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khayer Jessy passed the order today.

Earlier on November 14, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Moinul Islam also turned down their pleas for bail as police produced the duo before the court after end of their five-day remand in two cases lodged over possession of illegal weapons of narcotics.

Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Qaisarul Islam on November 8 placed them on three-day remand each in arms case, while Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Shikder placed them on two-day remand in narcotics case.

Erfan, also son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Salim, and his bodyguard was placed on two-day fresh remand on November 1 in a case lodged over allegedly assaulting an officer of Bangladesh Navy and giving him life threat.

Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur on October 28 placed the duo on three-day remand in the case.

Erfan Salim and his men allegedly assaulted Lt Wasif Ahmad Khan of Bangladesh Navy in the capital’s Kalabagan signal area in the evening on October 25.

The navy officer filed the case against Erfan, his bodyguard Md Zahid, protocol officer AB Siddique Dipu, driver Mizanur Rahman and 2/3 unidentified persons.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on October 26 arrested Erfan from their old town ancestral home and seized 38 walkie talkie sets, one airgun, one foreign-made pistol, five VPS sets, one handcuff, a drone, and seven bottles of foreign liquor, among other things.

RAB Mobile Court on the same day sentenced Erfan and his bodyguard Zahid to a total of one-year imprisonment for keeping illegal foreign liquor and unauthorized walkie talkie sets and sent them to Dhaka Central Jail in suburban Keraniganj.
