Sports can refrain youth from terrorism, drug abuse: Khaleque

KHULNA, Nov 14, 2020 (BSS) – Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Mayor Talukder
Abdul Khaleque stressed the need for regular sports exercise for good health,
saying sports can refrain the new generation from drug abuse and terrorism.

“Bangladesh have reached a new height globally through sports like cricket
as the government has taken various steps to improve our sports sector,” he
said while inaugurating a carom competition as the chief guest at Lions
School auditorium in the city on Friday.

Marking the ‘Mujib Year’, the managing committee of the school organised
the carom competition in memory of Sheikh Russel, the younger son of Father
of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Terming carom is a popular sport of Bangladesh, the KCC mayor urged youths
to practice regular sports for maintaining mental and physical fitness.

“Sports can help to growth human proficiency side by side making good
health. Now women have not retrograde of any sector including sports and they
had already achieved reputation in this sector globally,” Khaleque added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working tirelessly to bring the country
forward, he said, adding that if Sheikh Russel had survived, he would have
worked hard for the wellbeing of people as well as the country.

KCC panel mayor Ali Akbor Tipu presided over the function while general
secretary of city unit Awami League MDA Babul Rana, joint secretary of
Bangladesh Chess Federation Masudur Rahman Mallick, among others, addressed.

A total of 64 participants of the Khulna division attended the daylong
carom completion.
