1,050 candidates elected in Myanmar’s general elections

YANGON, Nov. 13,2020 (BSS/XINHUA) – A total of 1,050 candidates have been elected for the three levels of Myanmar’s parliament so far after Sunday’s general elections, according to the result announced by the Union Election Commission (UEC) on Friday.

In the elections, 5,639 candidates vied for 1,117 parliamentary seats — 315 seats in the House of Representatives (Lower House), 161 seats in the House of Nationalities (Upper House), 612 seats in the Regional or State Parliaments and 29 ethnic minority seats in the Regional or State Parliaments, respectively.

As of Friday afternoon, 300 candidates have been elected for the Lower House, while 156 candidates secured seats for the Upper House, 578 for the Regional or State Parliaments and 16 for ethnic minority, the commission’s figures said.

Of 1,106 candidates fielded by the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), 876 candidates secured parliamentary seats so far, passing the target seats to form a new government, while the opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) held 63 seats and other political parties won 111 parliamentary seats, the UEC’s latest figures showed.

Of the current state leaders, President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi have secured seats in the House of Representatives (Lower House), while Vice President Henry Van Thio won a seat in the House of Nationalities (Upper House), according to the UEC’s daily result announcements.

The multiparty general elections were the third under the terms of the country’s 2008 Constitution.

The general elections held every five years produces elected representatives to the next term of the parliament, which will further elect president and two vice presidents and form a new term of government.

The ruling NLD party won an absolute majority of parliamentary seats in the last general elections on Nov. 8, 2015, and has been running the government since 2016.
