Austria reports new daily record of 9,262 COVID-19 cases

VIENNA, Nov. 12, 2020 (BSS/XINHUA) — Austria on Thursday reported 9,262 new COVID-19 infections within the past 24 hours, another all-time high since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to data published by the Ministry of Interior.

So far, there have been 181,642 positive test results in the Alpine country. Currently, 3,811 people are in hospital for COVID-19 treatment, and 546 of them are in intensive care units, the data showed.

A total of 1,608 people have died as a result of COVID-19 since March.

Health Minister Rudolf Anschoberon on Thursday described the latest pictures of large crowds in some shopping centers as “worrying,” urging the population to do everything they can to reduce contacts and risks.

Gerald Gartlehner, an expert in evidence-based medicine from Danube University Krems, told local media that people have to wait and see the effects of the second lockdown, which came into force in early November.

“If the measures work, the numbers should stabilize towards the end of the week, ideally perhaps show a decline,” he was quoted by Austria Presse Agentur (APA) as saying.

As the world is struggling to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, countries including Germany, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States are racing to find a vaccine.
