Winter vegetable cultivation in full swing in Manikganj
MANIKGANJ, Nov 11, 2020 (BSS) – The vegetable cultivators of the district are busy to cultivate the various kinds of winter vegetable, specially the leafy vegetable.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the farmers of the vast areas of the district already completed the cultivation of leafy vegetable such as radish, palongshak, lalshak, datashak, bean, bottle gourd, cucumber, lady’s finger, brinjal, cabbage and cauliflower are also being cultivated in full swing in all the seven upazilas of the district.
The sources said the land of Manikganj sadar upazila, Singair upazila and Saturia upazila are suitable for vegetable cultivation. Carrot is the main vegetable of Singair upazila of the district.
More than 8500 hectares of land is being brought under vegetable cultivation in the district with a production target of 2,21000 metric tones during the current season, the sources said.
Though the vegetable cultivation was delayed due to several time floods in the district, but most of the cultivators have already completed vegetable cultivation in their lands of the district.
The early cultivated vegetable is now available in the markets. The vegetable cultivators are happy to get the maximum prices of their products.
Md. Fazal Sheikh, one of the well known vegetable cultivators of village Darogram of Saturia upazila, said he has cultivated three bighas of land cauli flower this year and already started to harvest.
He said he has been selling Taka 2200 to Taka 2500 per mound of cauli flower in whole sale market and expecting a good profit, adding that he will cultivate the same vegetable in the same lands for second time.
Fazal said the vegetable traders from Dhaka and other parts of the country have started to buy vegetable from the farmers and some of the cultivators are sending their products directly to the different markets for getting more profit.
The DAE sources said the fixed target of vegetable cultivation may be exceeded as it is continuing all over the district.
