Two get life term for possessing drugs in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Nov 11, 2020 (BSS) – A trial court here has sentenced two drug peddlers to life term imprisonment in a case filed on charges of possessing of 50 bottles of phensidyl in the district in 2013.

Additional District and Session Judge Abdus Salam found them guilty of the charge and handed down the verdict in their presence on Tuesday.

The convicts were identified as Mehedi Hassan Nahid, 24, son of Abdul Kader of Chowmuhani village and his co-villager Jamil Sarker, 20, son of Jahidul Karim. They were also fined Taka 50,000 each in default to suffer one year more behind the bar.

The prosecution story, in brief, is that a team of the Department of Narcotics (DNC) arrested the persons with 50 bottles of phensedyl from a three-wheeler at Kathalbari area on Rajshahi-Natore highway under Puthiya Upazila in the district on September 12, 2013.

Subsequently, DNC Inspector Farhad Akanda had lodged a case with Puthiya Police Station on the same day. Upon completion of investigation police pressed charges accusing them.

Before pronouncing the verdict, the court examined the recorded depositions of five prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidence.

Additional Public Prosecutor Shariful Islam conducted the case on behalf of the state.
