2 killed in massive car bomb blast in S. Afghanistan: police

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Nov. 9, 2020 (BSS/Xinhua) – At least two people, including an assailant, were killed and 16 others wounded in a massive car bomb blast hitting Maiwand district in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province on Sunday night, local police confirmed on Monday.

“One woman martyred and 16 people were wounded in a car bomb explosion that occurred in Maiwand district roughly at 8:00 p.m. Sunday. Details will be shared with media as appropriate,” Jamal Barakzai, provincial police spokesman, told Xinhua.

The wounded were transported to the district hospital and a regional hospital in provincial capital Kandahar city, the police official added.

In the meantime, unofficial sources said that the explosion took place after a suicide car bomb hit a camp of highway police near the district bazaar, killing 13 people and wounding 33 others.

They said the number of casualties may rise as the deadly explosion caused massive destruction, destroying the camp’s building, several nearby houses and shops.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks so far.

In a separate development, eight women and children were killed and seven others wounded after three mortar shells fired by Taliban militants struck Police District 6 of Ghazni city, capital of eastern Ghazni province late on Sunday.
