Govt working to maintain navigability of waterways: Khalid Mahmud

DHAKA, Nov 7, 2020 (BSS) – Pointing out that rivers are the lifeline of Bangladesh, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said the present government is working to restore navigability of the country’s dying rivers.

“The government has intensified its efforts to save the rivers and other water bodies from the illegal encroachment and it has taken various initiatives including capital dredging to ensure normal flow of waters in the rivers,” he told a seminar here.

The state minister was speaking as the chief guest at the seminar on “Things to do for the development of rivers, waterways and tourism” organized by the Shipping and Communication Reporters Forum (SCRF) at the National Press Club here today, said a press release.

The event was presided over by the President of the organization Ashish Kumar Sen , Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Commodore Golam Sadek, Former Director General of River Research Institute Engineer Lutfar Rahman, River Researcher Aminur Rasul Babu, Former General Secretary of SCRF Rafiqul Islam Sabuj and current Vice President Amaresh Roy.

Former President Anisur Rahman Khan presented the keynote paper at the programme conducted by SCRF General Secretary Mohsinul Karim.

The state minister said the country has witnessed a remarkable progress as the government has implemented various effective initiatives.
