Enhancing Boro rice production stressed on food security

RANGPUR, Nov 7, 2020 (BSS) – Experts at a workshop here have stressed the
necessity on adopting latest technologies and high yielding rice varieties to
further enhance the Boro rice production for ensuring national food security
amid changing the climate.

They viewed this at a regional workshop on ‘Enhancing Boro rice production
in Rangpur region’ organised by Rangpur Regional Station of Bangladesh Rice
Research Institute (BRRI) at BRAC Learning Centre in the city on Friday.

Rangpur regional office of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE)
extended assistance in arranging the workshop presided over by Director
General (DG) of BRRI Agriculturalist Dr Shahjahan Kabir.

Officials, experts, scientists and researchers of the DAE, BRRI, Seed
Certification Agency, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation,
Agriculture Information Service, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute,
Department of Agriculture Marketing, Barind Multipurpose development
Authority (BMDA), Water Development Board (WDB), NGOs and representatives of
different companies participated.

Agriculture Secretary Md Mesbahul Islam attended the workshop as the chief
guest.

Acting Additional Director of the DAE for Rangpur region Agriculturalist
Md Moniruzzaman, Acting Director (Field Wing) of the DAE Agriculturalist
Mahfuz Hossain Mirdah, BRRI director (administration and common service)
Agriculturalist Krishnapada Halder and Senior Scientific Officer at BRRI’s
Rangpur regional station Agriculturalist Md Rakibul Hassan spoke as special
guests.

Chief Scientific Officer (Plant Breeding Division) of BRRI Agriculturalist
Dr Khondker Md Iftekharuddowla delivered the keynote essay narrating goals
and objectives of the workshop while Senior Liaison Officer at BRRI
Headquarters Agriculturalist Mohammad Abdul Momin moderated it.

They speakers laid special importance on adopting latest irrigation
technologies like alternate wetting and drying methods, high yielding and
hybrid varieties of Boro rice seeds and ensuring proper agronomic managements
to increase Boro rice yield rate.

Mesbahul Islam said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh
Hsian is farmers’-friendly and doing everything to inspire farmers in
enhancing production of all crops by using every inch of land across the
country.

“The agriculture scientists, researchers and extension officers must take
on the biggest challenges of enhancing Boro rice production in the Rangpur
agriculture region under the adverse impacts of climate change for attaining
sustainable food security,” he said.
