Coronavirus: Latest global developments

PARIS, Nov 6, 2020 (BSS/AFP) – Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis:

– More than 48.7 million cases –

The virus has so far claimed 1,235,148 lives worldwide with 48,707,787 registered cases since it first emerged in China late last year, according to an AFP tally on Friday at 1100 GMT based on official sources.

The US records more than 120,000 new infections smashing a daily record set the day before.

It remains the most affected country, with 234,944 deaths. The countries with the next-highest death tolls are Brazil with 161,736, India with 124,985, Mexico with 93,772 and the UK with 48,120.

– Italy lockdown –

Swathes of Italy return to lockdown with five northern “red zones” plus Calabria in the country’s “toe” shuttering non-essential businesses affecting 16 million people.

– City-wide testing –

Liverpool begins England’s first city-wide trial of testing in an attempt to prevent hospitals becoming overwhelmed.

– Violent shutdown protest –

A demonstration against Slovenia’s shutdown sparks some of the most violent scenes the country has seen in years, as police use tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

– US emergency spending –

Fed Chair Jerome Powell says more emergency spending will be “essential” to support the US economy, though any proposal is likely to face congressional gridlock.

– Uber in the red –

Uber reports it lost $1.1 billion in the recently ended quarter as the pandemic wallops its ride-hailing business, while boosting its food delivery service.

– Stricken NFL –

The US National Football League’s Houston Texans and Chicago Bears shut down their practice facilities after each team had a player test positive.

The League fines the Las Vegas Raiders $500,000 and strips the team of a draft pick for flouting the league’s sanitary protocols.

– Sports channel layoffs –

ESPN says it is cutting some 300 jobs due to virus-related turmoil in the sports world.
