RU former VC Prof Altaf passes away in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Nov 5, 2020 (BSS)- Former Pro-vice-chancellor and vice-chancellor of Rajshahi University Prof Altaf Hossain breathed his last at his residence at Upashahar area in Rajshahi city today. He was around 75.

He left behind his wife, two daughters and one son and scores of students, academic colleagues and host relatives to mourn his death.

A RU release said Prof Hossain was Pro-VC from August 27, 1994 to October 7, 1996 and VC from June 5, 2005 to May 15, 2008.

During his long academic career in the Department of Zoology from 1973 to 2010, Prof Hossain supervised around 32 PhD and significant number of M. Phil and post-graduation research. Besides, a remarkable number of research papers and books were published in both home and abroad to his credit.

Born in Chandlai village in Chapainawabgonj sadar in 1945, Prof Altaf Hossain obtained M. Sc degree from Dhaka University in 1966 and got PhD degree from Andhra University in India in 1976. Apart from that he did his post-doctoral degree in New Castle University in the UK in 1976.

His first namaje janaja was held at RU cental Jamme Mosque after Johar prayers and buried at his family graveyard in Chandlai.

Meanwhile, RU VC Prof Abdus Sobhan and Pro-VCs Prof Ananda Kumar Shaha and Prof Chowdhury Jakaria, among many others, expressed their deep condolence at the death of Prof Hossain and conveyed sympathy to the members of the bereaved family. They also sought blessings of the almighty Allah for eternal peace of the departed soul.
