Proper medical waste management stressed for Rangpur city

RANGPUR, Nov 5, 2020 (BSS) – Public representatives and experts have
stressed on ensuring proper management and disposal of medical waste to
prevent spread of many communicable diseases for building an eco-friendly and
clean Rangpur city.

They made the observation at a views-sharing meeting on ‘Medical Waste
Management’ jointly organised by Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) and PRISM
Bangladesh Foundation on Wednesday afternoon at the conference room of RpCC
in the city.

Panel Mayor of Rangpur Mahmudur Rahman Titu attended the meeting as the
chief guest with Chief Executive Officer of RpCC Ruhul Amin Miah in the
chair.

President of Medical Waste Management Committee of RpCC and City Councilor
Mahbubur Rahman Manju, Deputy Commissioner of Police of Rangpur Metropolitan
Politian Police Mohidul Islam, Superintending Engineer of RpCC Amdad Hossain
and Deputy Director of the Department of Environment Mezbabul Alam addressed
the meeting.

District Coordinator of PRISM Bangladesh Foundation Istiaque Mahfuz
narrated importance of proper medical waste management for maintaining sound
public health and better environment in urban areas.

Mezbabul Alam said around 20 percent of medical waste could be perilous to
cause infection and parasitic diseases which are preventable and treatable
but remaining as primary causes of death globally.

“Late and improper disposal of healthcare waste could lead to public
annoyance, bad odour and nastiness ultimately leading to spread of
communicable diseases like cholera, hepatitis A, B and C, dysentery and other
diseases,” he added.

Mohidul Islam laid maximum emphasis on following proper disposal methods
like waste minimization, segregation, handling and storage, transportation,
treatment and destruction and final disposal to avoid environmental pollution
and health hazards.

The chief guest said every citizen should work to ensure proper medical
waste disposal in Rangpur city for reducing possibility of contamination of
land and water with chemicals, micro organisms and infestation of insects and
rodents in local environment.
