Khalid for cautiously handling hazardous goods in ports

DHAKA, Nov 4, 2020 (BSS) – State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury today urged all the ministries, departments and agencies concerned to carefully handle, transport and maintain dangerous goods, explosive, and hazardous materials in the country’s sea as well as land ports in order to ensure safety.

The state minister said this while addressing an inter-ministerial meeting at the ministry’s conference room here.

Shipping Secretary Mohammad Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury, Chairman of Chattogram Port Rear Admiral Sheikh Abul Kalam Azad, Mongla Port Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, Bangladesh Land Port Authority Chairman KM Tariqul Islam, Director General of Shipping Department Commodore Abu Zafor Md Jalal Uddin, among others, in person and virtually were present at the meeting.

Suggesting that problems should be identified and solved under one umbrella, Khaled said, “For the overall security of the country, we need to be more careful in handling combustible, explosive and dangerous products.”

He said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is running the country very efficiently. She instructed me to work under an umbrella”.

The meeting informed that there are 163 tonnes of combustible, explosive and hazardous materials in Chattogram port for auction by Chattogram Customs. Besides, 535 tonnes have been stored in different sheds of Chattogram port.

Benapole land port has 4269.39 tonnes and Banglabandha land port has 7.8 tonnes of combustible, explosive and hazardous goods.
