KHULNA, Nov 3, 2020 (BSS) – Framers here expressed their much satisfaction over newly invented BREE-90 paddy yield that was cultivated experimentally for the first time in the coastal Batiaghata upazila during the current Aman season.

Bangladesh Paddy Research Institute (BPRI) invented this paddy variety which is facilitating farmers to follow a new cropping pattern as they also get time to cultivate more crops after harvesting BREE-90 this year.

Farmers got at least five tons of lustrous grains of BREE-90 paddy from each hector of land.

Ronojit Roy, a farmer of Guptomari village of Batiaghata upazila, has cultivated the newly invented paddy for the first time and got better yield within 118 days of farming.

Talking to BSS, he said, the newly invented paddy will be found in the middle of Bangla month Kartik. It grows especially in high or middle types of high land, he said.

“I have found nine maunds of BREE-90 paddy from my three khatas of lands with having three maunds from per katha during the current Aman season. I have got profit Taka 15000 after selling it,” he added.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said several farmers of Dauniafad and Guptomari village of the upazila have experimentally cultivated this paddy around four months back. They become very happy as the new paddy yielded bumper production, they said.

Farmers of the upazila generally produced sunned rice like Rani Salute, Jotai, Horkoch. But most of the farmers have been interested in cultivating BREE-90 paddy seeing its prospect of getting good yield, sources said.

Contacted, Agriculture Officer of Batiaghata Upazila, DAE, Robiul Islam told BSS that scientists of BPRI have invented the BREE-90 paddy and the Bangladesh Seed Certification Board gave clearance certificate last year.

He said farmers of the coastal upazila had produced four to four and half tons of BREE-49 paddy from each hectare of land while at least five tons of BRE-90 paddy is expected to grow from each hectare of land.

Besides, farmers of the region are keen interest to cultivate the BREE-90 paddy as it grows huge than other crops and they get more profit, he said, adding that DAE will provide all sort of necessary agri-input among the farmers if they show interest to cultivate it.
