Social awareness a must for ensuring domestic workers’ right: Mozammel

DHAKA, Nov 2, 2020 (BSS) – Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haq today stressed the need for social awareness to ensure the rights of the domestic workers as most of the people are not aware of this.

“It is necessary to develop social awareness to ensure the right of the domestic workers as most of the people is unaware about their rights”, he said as the chief guest in a view exchange meeting on necessary measures to ratify ILOconvention-189 concerning decent work for domestic workers at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium here.

On 16 June 2011, the International Labour Conference of the International Labour Organization adopted the Conventionconcerning decent work for domestic workers, which is also referred to as the Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189).

The convention offers specific protection to domestic workers. It lays down basic rights and principles, and requires States to take a series of measures with a view to making decent work a reality for domestic workers.

Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) and Dhaka Reporters Unity jointly organized the function.

To ensure right of the domestic workers, the minister put emphasis on enactment of law, saying that the domestic workers should be recognized as worker as per the constitution promulgated by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1972 ensuring rights of all citizens.

Chaired by BILS secretary general and executive director Nazrul Islam Khan, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by member of parliamentary standing committee on labour and employment ministry Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan MP and DRU President Rafiqul Islam Azad.

Kazi Abdul Hannan, online editor of Daily Observer and president of Labour Right Journalist forum, presented the keynote paper at the function while forum general secretary Ataur Rahman moderated the programme.
