HC wants hospitals’ explanation over death of infant twins
DHAKA, Nov 02, 2020 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today ordered authorities of three city hospitals to submit their explanations within 48 hours for not providing timely medication to infant twins, causing their deaths without treatment.
A High Court division virtual bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order against authorities of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital, Dhaka Shishu Hospital and Mugda Islamia Hospital, also issuing a rule in this regard.
The court in its rule, asked the authorities to explain as to why it shall not declare their inaction to this end shall not be declared illegal.
The court came up with the order as the Supreme Court MLSS Md Abul Kalam, father of the dead twins, brought the bodies of his child directly to the court premises, demanding justice for his babies.
“Md Abul Kalam’s wife SayeraKhatun went into labour this morning and the Supreme Court staff was trying to take her to Mugda Hospital. Sayera gave birth to the twins in the CNG auto-rickshaw. As Kalam took them to nearby Islamia Hospital in Mugda, they sent them to Shishu Hospital in Shyamoli, saying they don’t have necessary equipment to treat the new-born twins,” Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told newsmen.
When Kalam took his babies to that hospital, they also sent them back, saying they don’t have any ICU bed vacant and would need Taka five thousand daily for each baby, if their parents want to admit them in the general ward.
“Kalam at that moment phoned a High Court judge, who advised him to bring them to BSMMU Hospital and contact a director there. When the poor father went there with his babies, the personal officer of that director kept them waiting, saying his boss was in a meeting. Kalam was kept waiting with his newborn child still inside an ambulance. But after the meeting, that director went home, without bothering to talk to Kalam. After some time, when that personal officer brought a doctor to see the babies, they were already dead,” the DAG added.
