Tk 4.30 lakh fined for selling potatoes at higher prices

DHAKA, Oct 31, 2002 (BSS) – A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) today fined seven potato wholesalers Taka 4.30 lakh at Mohammadpur Krishi Market area here on charge of selling potatoes disregarding the price fixed by the government.

As part of the ongoing drive, the mobile court, led by RAB’s executive magistrate Palash Kumar Basu in presence of the agricultural marketing department officials, conducted a-five-hour drive at the Mohammadpur Krishi Market from 11:30 am today.

Executive magistrate Palash Kumar Basu told BSS that the wholesalers are: Messrs Tanha Enterprise, Mayer Doa Banijyaloy , Munshiganj Banijyaloy, Messrs Allar Dan Vandar, Messrs Manik Enterprise, New Bikrampur Banijyaloy and Messrs New Shah Alam.

He said New Bikrampur Banijyaloy and Munshiganj Banijyaloy have been fined Tk one lakh or awarded three-month imprisonment. Manik Enterprise has been sentenced to one-month jail or fine Tk 30,000. The other four wholesalers were fined Tk 50,000 or one-month imprisonment.

“All accused paid their fine amount to evade the imprisonment,” the magistrate added.

Earlier, the government had fixed the wholesale price of potatoes at Tk 30 per kg. But the potatoes were being sold at 40-42 rupees ignoring government’s directives.
