Prof Arefin for amending Tobacco Control Law to achieve SDGs

DHAKA, Oct 28, 2020 (BSS) – Chairman of the board of directors of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique today laid emphasis on amending the Tobacco Control Law to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He said in order to achieve the SDGs and Tobacco Free Bangladesh within 2040 announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, strong initiatives need to be taken to reduce the tobacco consumption, said a press release.

Referring to some weaknesses in the existing tobacco control laws, the former DU vice chancellor said strong tobacco control laws and its strict implementation are required to make Bangladesh a tobacco-free country.

Prof. Arefin made the observations when a delegation of PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress), an anti-tobacco research and advocacy organization met with him.

He said, “I am hopeful that Bangladesh will continue to work towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. I think some amendments to the existing Tobacco Control Act are needed to keep the people away from consuming such a toxic product like tobacco.”

Among others, PROGGA’s Director Monwar Hossain and program officer Mehedi were present at the discussion meeting.
