Stocks extend downbeat

DHAKA, Oct 27, 2020 (BSS) – Country’s both the bourses, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed today extending negative note due to profit booking sell off.

DSE continued downward trend for the fourth consecutive session amid choppy trading as shaky investors continued profit booking sell off over last few session’s price upsurge.

The investors opted to liquidate their holdings in sector specific stocks based on the latest corporate declarations which have failed to meet the expectations.

The broad index, DSEX settled at 4867.96 points on Tuesday with a loss of 24.04 points or 0.49 percent.

Besides two selective indices, Blue Chip index, DSE30 and Shariah index, DSES also declined by 7.50 points and 6.41 points to settle at 1675.40 points and 1103.05 points respectively.

On the DSE trading floor, a total number of 184,192 million trades were executed in today’s trading session with a trading volume of 354.50 million securities.

The turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, increased by 13 percent over last session as the investors took fresh position. DSE’s turnover stood at Taka 10.00 billion from Taka 8.85 billion in the previous session.

The general insurance sector continued to attract the investors which have been reflected in the daily turnover board over the last couple of months.

Losers took lead over gainers as out of 356 issues traded, 85 securities gained price while 205 declined and 66 remained unchanged.

The market-cap of DSE decreased to Taka 3,914 billion from Taka 3,933 billion of the previous session.

Shares of Associated Oxygen continued to soar as its shares price jumped 50 percent, the highest allowable limit for the second straight session over the new issue, according to a market analyst, International Leasing Securities Limited (ILSL).

It said major sectors witnessed correction today. Among the major sectors – engineering (-2.6%), life insurance (-3.6%) and mutual fund (-1.7%) sectors witnessed price correction while general insurance (4.4%), IT (1.2%) and tannery (0.6%) sectors achieved price appreciation.

The investors’ activity was mostly centered on general insurance (38.8%), pharma (10.9%) and financial institution (8.9%) sectors while Beximco pharma (4.7%), Lankabangla Finance (3.6%) and Brac Bank (3.5%) led the scrip wise turnover board, added ILSL.

Beximco Pharma topped the turnover chart followed by Lankabangla Finance, Sandhani Insurance, Brac Bank, Beximco Limited, Global Insurance, Express Insurance, Pioneer Insurance, Square Pharma and Eastland Insurance.

The top 10 gainers were Associated Oxygen, Pioneer Insurance, Mercantile Insurance, Express Insurance, Peoples Insurance, Prime Insurance, Provati Insurance, Salvo Chemical, Nitol Insurance and Continental Insurance.

The top ten losers were Desh Garments, Familytex, Generation Next, Aramit Cement, Imam Button, Tallu Spinning, Keya Cosmetic, Tung Hi Knitting, Zahintex and Dhaka Dying.

On the other hand, port city bourse, Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed in red, maintaining the bearish streak of previous sessions.

Selective categories index, CSCX and all shares price index, CASPI decreased by 20.72 points and 41.77 points to stand at 8363.69 points and 13900.58 points respectively.

At CSE, a total of 12,932,206 share and mutual funds of 273 companies were traded, of which 94 issues advanced while 136 declined and 43 issues remained unchanged.
