MP’s son, 2 others detained for assaulting navy officer

DHAKA, Oct 26, 2020 (BSS) – The members of law enforcement agencies, in a drive, detained three people, including lawmaker Haji Md Salim’s son, on charge of assaulting a navy officer near Kalabagan crossing in Dhanmondi area here last evening.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Legal and Media Wing Director Lieutenant Colonel Ashik Billah told BSS that they conducted a raid at the Lalbag house of Hazi Salim, MP, of Dhaka-7 constituency, and arrested his son Irfan Salim, 37, and body guard Mohammad Jahid Hossain, 35, in connection with a case filed with Dhanmondi police station.

Irfan is the councilor of ward No. 30 of Dhaka South City Corporation (DCC). He was in the car with a sticker of the Member of Parliament (MP) of the Jatiya Sangsad.

Meanwhile, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhanmondi Police Station M Ikram Ali Mia told BSS that Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, 30, driver of the car that hit the motorbike of navy officer Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan, was arrested last night.

The OC said driver Mohammad Mizanur Rahman was produced before the court that remanded him for quizzing in details of the incident.

The navy officer was allegedly assaulted by a group led by Irfan Selim near Kalabagan crossing under Dhanmondi police station last evening after the car owned by lawmaker Hazi Salim hit his motorbike.

Lieutenant Wasif, in his complainant, said the car first hit the motorcycle while he was returning home with his wife after purchasing some books.

As he tried to protest the incident, a few men got down from the car, assaulted him and knocked out his one tooth.

He also accused the gang of assaulting his wife also rebuking them. The attackers went on threatening the navy officer to kill him.
Later, the attackers escaped the scene leaving the car behind as people started to gather around.

In the case, Irfan Selim, bodyguard Mohammad Zahid Hossain, Hazi Salim owned Modina Group’s protocol officer AB Siddique Dipu, 45, and driver Mizanur Rahman and two or three others have been accused.
