16 fishermen jailed for catching hilsha in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Oct 25, 2020 (BSS) – Sixteen fishermen were awarded different terms of jail and fined Taka 10,000 by mobile courts of the district for catching Hilsa in the river Padma and the Jamuna defying a government ban.

Of the fishermen, 15 were awarded jail each for one year, while one was awarded for 12 days.

Preetikana Paul, Senior Assistant Director of Department of Fishery, Manikganj told BSS today a total of six separate mobile courts have been conducted in the last 24 hours on the river Padma and Jamuna in three upazilas of the district and 17 special drives were also conducted in the areas.

During this period, a total of 6 lac 515 thousand miter of current nets worth about Taka one crore 62 lac were seized and burnt.

The seized 22-kg Hilsa were distributed among the orphanages and madrasas of the areas.

The government has imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of Hilsa from October 14.
