Govt takes necessary precautionary measures to face possible cyclone

DHAKA, Oct 23, 2020 (BSS) – The government has taken all necessary precautionary measures in an attempt to face the catastrophe of the possible cyclone as the deep depression has been formed over northwest Bay and adjoining areas which now centered about 445-km west-southwest of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar, 240-km and 280-km southwest of Mongla and Payra ports.

The ministry of disaster management and relief has taken the measures following an emergency meeting held at the ministry’s conference room last night.

The meeting was chaired by Secretary of Disaster Management and Relief Ministry M Mohsin where other high officials of the ministry, including Director General of the Disaster Management Department Atiqul Haque, were present.

As the precautionary measures, the ministry has decided to carry out precautionary campaign for creating awareness among the people through maintaining social distance and opening control room at the district administration offices of the coastal regions.

Keeping all the flood shelter centers neat and clean, the meeting also has decided to make arrangements of necessary ingredients including baby and dry food and keep adequate vehicles ready for shifting people to the flood shelters.

Moreover, a total of 74,000 trained volunteers also will be kept ready under the cyclone preparedness programme (CPP).

Meanwhile, the flood forecasting center in its latest bulletin forecasted that the deep depression over northwest Bay and its adjoining area which was centered about 445 km west-southwest of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar, 240 km and 280 km southwest of Mongla and Payra ports till 6am today likely to move in a northeasterly direction further.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 48 kilometers of the deep depression centered is about 50 kph rising to 60kph in gust or squalls. Sea will remain rough near the deep depression center.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongl and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local warning signal number four.

Under the influence of deep depression, the low-lying of the coastal district of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagherhat, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Borguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barishal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, NOakhali, Feni, Chattogram and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by the wind driven surge height of 03-05 feet above normal astronomical tide.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice. They are also advised not to venture into the deep sea.
