123 fishermen jailed for defying Hilsa ban in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Oct 22, 2020 (BSS) – Some 123 fishermen were awarded different terms of jail and fined Taka 1.84 lakh by mobile courts of the district for catching Hilsa in the river Padma and the Jamuna defying government ban.

Pritikona Paul, Senior Assistant Director of Department of Fishery, Manikganj today told BSS a total of 54 separate mobile courts have been conducted so far in the river Padma and Jamuna in three upazilas of the district from the beginning of Hilsa fish catching ban imposed from October 14 adding that 106 special drives also conducted during the period.

About 27.59 lakh meters of current net cost of Taka 6.89 crore were also seized from Harirampu, Shibalaya and Daulatpur upazilas of the district.

Seized 128 kg Hilsa were distributed among the orphanages and madrasas of the areas.

The government has imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of Hilsa from October 14.
