KCC Mayor emphasizes smooth navigability for sustainable embankment

KHULNA, Oct 20, 2020(BSS) – Khulna Mayor (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque today underscored the need for dredging of rivers, saying successful result would not get in construction of high embankment without enhancing rivers navigability.

He said coastal people now can’t find advantages from embankment, constructed like in sixty’s and smooth rivers navigation is imperative for sustainable embankment.

The KCC mayor made the comment today at an advocacy meeting styled ‘Embankment: Ensuring Environmental Sustainability, Transparency, Quality and Timeless in Maintenance, Repair and New Construction,’ held at the journalist Humayun Kabir Balu auditorium at Khulna Press Club.

Rupantar, a non government organization(NGO), organized the meeting in cooperation with CARE, Bangladesh.

Stressing the need of regular dredging, the KCC Mayor underscored the need for strengthening role of public representatives as well as local government for river protection and durable embankment.

He said water logging cannot be removed and development would not be possible in Khulna city without the dredging of Rupsha and Bhairab Rivers.

Head of Environmental Science of Khulna University Professor Dr Salma Begum, President of Khulna Press Club S M Nazrul Islam addressed the meeting as special guests.

Senior Programme Coordinator of CARE Bangladesh Mrittunjoy Dash, Rupantor Executive Director Swapon Guho among others, addressed.

Executive Director of Sundarban Academy Professor Anwarul Kadir presented the keynote paper while executive Director of Rupantar Rafiqul Islam Khokon moderated it.
