SC upholds HC bail for former lawmaker AKMA Awal, wife
DHAKA, Oct 19, 2020 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court
(SC) today upheld a High Court order that granted bail to former Pirojpur-1
lawmaker AKMA Awal and his wife Laila Pervin in two graft cases.
A four-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud
Hossain passed the order, dismissing two pleas filed by Anti-Corruption
Commission (ACC) against the High Court order.
The High Court on October 5 granted four-week anticipatory bail to the
couple in two separate graft cases. The High Court had asked Awal and Pervin
to surrender to the trial court concerned after four weeks.
The anti-graft body however, appealed with the Appellate Division
against the High Court order.
The ACC on September 30 filed the two cases against Awal and his wife
for amassing illegal wealth of Taka 33.27 crore and Taka 10.98 crore
respectively.
