Sheikh Russell’s 56th birth anniversary observed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Oct 18, 2020 (BSS) – The 56th birth anniversary of Sheikh Russell, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed today in the city as elsewhere in the country today.

Sheikh Russell was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi.

He was assassinated along with most of his family members including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 in 1975.

To mark the birth anniversary, Rajshahi city unit of Bangladesh Awami League held a discussion meeting and doa mahfil at its office paying rich tribute to Sheikh Russell.

Leaders and workers of the unit also placed floral wreaths on the portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four other national leaders.

City unit president and Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton accompanied by other front-ranking leaders joined the programmes.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Liton said Sheikh Russell was brutally killed along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, when he was a student of class four.

Among others, City unit general secretary Dablu Sarker, former vice-presidents Shaheen Akter Rainy, Professor Shafiqur Rahman and Muhammad Ali Kamal also spoke on the occasion.

Different other socio-cultural organisations including the associate bodies of Awami League also observed the birth anniversary of Sheikh Russell in the city in befitting manner.

Rajshahi University authorities have also observed the birth anniversary of Sheikh Russell on its campus. Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan and Pro-vice-chancellor Prof Chowdhury Jakaria were present on the occasion.
