DHAKA, Sept 11, 2017 (BSS) – The government has opened a cell to record all information related to Rohingyas and monitor the daily situation on Bangladesh-Myanmar frontiers and in Rakhine state of the neighbouring country, officials said here today.
“The Rohingya Cell is entrusted with 10 specific tasks including constant monitoring of their biometric registration process and the situation on the borders with Myanmar,” a home ministry spokesman told BSS.
The cell, he said, was also tasked to monitor the security situation in Myanmar’s bordering Rakhine state, the scene of violence prompting the mass exodus of refugees to Bangladesh.
He said the ministry’s additional secretary for political affairs of the public security division Md Shamsur Rahman and joint secretary Md Shafiqur Rahman were made chief coordinator and coordinator of the cell.
According to an official order on its constitution, the cell would closely monitor the overall situation and law and order on the southeastern borders as surges of refugees continued to hit areas including Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban to evade atrocities at home.
It said the cell would collect and preserve the latest updates on Rohingya arrivals and their push backs, their biometric registration and measures taken to maintain law and order.
The cell would also collect information on the development in controlled gathering the refugees in specific areas alongside their accommodation and related facilities and the activities of the government, private and international organizations in providing them the humanitarian supports.
It will also be liable for collecting information of the visits of representatives from foreign and international organizations on the Bangladesh-Myanmar borders.
Public Security Division’s deputy secretaries Abu Hena Mostofa Zaman, Mohammad Faruk-uz-Zaman and Monir Hossain Chowhury were appointed respectively as the cell’s focal point, first substitute officer and second substitute officer.
