White Cane Safety Day observed in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Oct 16, 2020 (BSS) – The World White Cane Safety Day was
observed here on Thursday through active participation of the visually
impaired people.

Marking the day, Gaibandha Protibandhi Sheba and Shahajjo Kendra (GPSSK)
chalked out elaborate programmes.

On the occasion, white canes were distributed to the visually impaired
people of the district at the arrangement of GPSSK under National Foundation
for the Development of Disabled Person.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin distributed the white canes to the
visually impaired persons as the chief guest.

Later, a discussion meeting on the importance of the day was held at
GPSSK’s office here.

The DC addressed the meeting as the chief guest while Deputy Director of
Department of Social Services Emdadul Haque Pramanik was present as the
special guest.

The day has been being observed worldwide since 1969 to ensure legitimate
rights of the visually impaired people for their welfare.

The DC in his speeches said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina has implemented many welfare programmes for the visually impaired
people since 2009.

He also urged all stakeholders of the society to come forward to stand
beside the visually impaired people with a voluntary zeal.

Later, he formally inaugurated a Mujib Corner on the premises of GPSSK on
Mujib Barsho, the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman.

A large number of people including government officials, political leaders
and local elite were present on the occasion.
