JAMALPUR, Oct 15, 2020 (BSS) – Fisheries Department in the wake of countrywide 22 day ban on hilsha catching, selling, marketing, hoarding and transporting has already started disbursing rice among 8000 fishermen families in the district.

District Fisheries Office sources said the rice was disbursed among the fishermen families in Dewanganj, Islampur, Madarganj and Sarishabari Upazila of the district under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme.

Each families got 20 kilogram rice, the sources said adding that the food support was given to the poor fishermen families during the ban on hilsha fishing in rivers from October 14 to November 4 , the peak breeding period of the national fish.

District Fisheries Officer, Kaiser Mohammad Moinul Hassan said the food assistance has been increased this year though 5000 Fishermen families got the rice last year with a view to preventing fishing and achieving the target of increasing hilsha fish production.
