Poison-free vegetables farming rise in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, Oct 14, 2020 (BSS) – Many farmers in the district are now cultivating chemical and pesticide free vegetables for economic prospects of the crop.

Sources with the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said farmers of Bangladesh regularly use chemical fertilizers and pesticides in vegetables fields and as a result people are being attacked with various diseases by eating the polluted vegetables.

During the last few years, the DAE has taken necessary steps to produce chemical and pesticide free vegetables.

The department has been given knowledge to the farmers on the bad effects of using pesticide and chemical fertilizer on vegetables fields and also given them training on pest management.

Deputy Director of the DAE, Narsingdi Shovan Kumar Dhar said, Narsingdi is a leading vegetables production area in the country and usually supply 30 to 40 percent of its production to the capital and other districts.

Various Kinds of vegetables grow plenty in the district like been, brinjal, gourd sweet gourd, kakral, karola, koida, ladies finger, cucumber, cabbage, couliflower, tomato, potato, poi- shak, palong-shak, data-shak. DAE sources said over one lakh tones of vegetables have produced in the district both in the summer and winter season.

The deputy director said, because of the motivation and training, a large number of farmers of the district are now inspired to cultivate more chemical free vegetables using vermin-compost and other organic fertilizers and gradually its cultivation increasing in the district.

He said application of organic fertilizes like composts, vermin composts and green manure can increase crop production.

Women in the district also producing poison free vegetables both summer and winter season in their lands and homestead garden using cow dung and others organic fertilizers.

Salina Jahan of Shoikarchar village, Shibpur upazila of the district have achieved tremendous success in producing huge quantity of various chemical and pesticide free vegetables by using homemade vermin compost in her 20 bighas land and homestead garden during the last seven years.

Lovely Akther, another woman of Chinispur village in Narsingdi Sadar upazila, have also achieved success in producing huge quantity of various chemical free vegetables by using homemade compost in her 10 bighas land during the last two years.

Like Salina and Lovely Aktar, a number of women in Shibpur, Balabo, Polash, Raipura and Monohardi upazilas of the district are now engaged in producing chemical and pesticide free vegetables.

Now, they are very happy selling vegetables at high price as the demand of chemical free vegetables is more and rate is high then the vegetables producing by using chemical fertilizers and pesticide in the local markets.
