Ban on Hilsha fishing begins tomorrow

GAIBANDHA, Oct 13, 2020 (BSS) – Like 36 districts of the country Hilsha catching, selling, transporting, hoarding and marketing will be prohibited in the district from tomorrow to protect mother Hilsha for ensuring safe breeding.

District Fisheries Officer (DFO) Abdud Dayan said the government imposed a-22-day ban on the national fish catching with effect from October 14.

The government is implementing the “Hilsha Protection Campaign-2018” with basic objective to save mother hilsha during the peak breeding period.

The production of Hilsha in the country in 2018-19 was five lakh 15 thousand tonnes which has been increased to five lakh 33 thousand tonnes in 2019-20.

To raise massive awareness among the fishermen, the fish traders and the consumers organized a joint motivational meeting by district administration and the department of fisheries at the conference room of District Collectorate Building here on October 6.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin who addressed the meeting as the chief guest said the government has implemented various coordinated programmes for increasing Hilsha fish production.

‘ If anyone catches, sells, transports and hoards the Hilsha fish violating the restriction, the offenders will be will jailed for one or two years and fined up to TK . 5,000’, the DC added.

The punishment for the offenders will be doubled for recurring same crime , the DC further added.

The DC also sought whole hearted cooperation of all to make the programme a success in the district.

Senior Sadar upazila Fisheries Officer Sanjoy Banerjee, other fisheries officer and members of district task force committee including journalists attended the meeting.
