32,193 tonnes of fish produced last year in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Oct 11, 2020 (BSS) – Some 30,503 tonnes of fish were produced here last year as the fisheries department has taken a massive programme for boosting fish production in the district to meet its continuous demand.

To make the programme a success, a total of 14,579 ponds and marshy lands including 102 government and institutional ponds were brought under fish farming.

District fisheries officer Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman told BSS a total of 3,116 Kilogram of fish fry has already been released in 145 government and institutional ponds to produce 32,193 metric tonnes of fish in the district this year.

He said all the marshy land in the district will be brought under fish cultivation gradually.

Sources said there are 847.62 hectares of marshy land including government, institutional and private ponds in the district.
