MUNSHIGANJ, Oct 11, 2020 (BSS) – Over 4.8 kilometers of the multipurpose Padma Bridge have become visible as the 32nd span was installed on it today.

Executive Engineer of the Padma Bridge Dewan Abdul Quader told BSS that, “Despite trying all day on Saturday, the 32nd span could not be set up on the bridge due to strong current in the river. Overcoming all the adversities, the span was placed on the 4th and 5th pillars at the end point of Mawa at 9.30 am today.”

He said the 32nd span was supposed to be installed on June 24. But it could not be set up due to water rising in the river during flood and also heavy rains, he added.

On June 10 last, the 31st span of the Padma Bridge was installed bringing a total of 4.650 kilometers of the structure into view.

The 6.15 km long bridge will have two segments over which road and railways will be set up.

The distance from one pillar to another of the bridge is about 150 meters. Each pillar is capable of carrying 50,000 tons of load.

With the initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the construction work of the Padma Bridge began in December, 2014 with own fund.
The construction of the main bridge is being made by China Major Bridge Engineering Company (MBEC), a Chinese contractor Company, and the river management is being done by Sino Hydro Corporation of China.
