Fresh flood in Sadullapur villages after cutting embankment

GAIBANDHA, OCT10,2020(BSS) – A number of villages in Bongram union of Sadullapur upazila in the district have been flooded afresh following the cutting of a portion of the flood control embankment by some unidentified persons at Puran Laxmipur area of Sadullapur upazila on Wednesday.

Executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here Md. Mokhlasur Rahman said, when water level of the river Ghaghot decreased significantly and was flowing below under the danger level, some unidentified persons cut the dyke in the area on Wednesday and as a result a number of villages of Bongram union under Sadullapur upazila submerged creating untold sufferings to the people of the villages.

Flood water entered the houses of the villages and the roads and standing crops went under flood water, he also said.

Upazila agriculture officer Khazanur Rahman said, around 4000 hectares of T-Aman paddy land and 210 hectares of vegetable field went under water in Joynpur, Taluk Manduaand and Hobibullahpur villages.

As the seedlings of T-Aman paddy have the possibility to be damaged for remaining under the flood water, the affected farmers were advised to be ready for farming early varieties of robi crops like mustard, wheat and maize on their land just after recession of the flood water to recoup their losses.

Deputy Director (DD) of the department of agricultural extension (DAE) Masudur Rahman said16860 hectares of T-Aman paddy land and 555 hectares of vegetable land including 210 hectares of mashkalai land of the district went under flood water.

District relief and rehabilitation officer AKM Idris Ali said, around 1.5 lakh people of the district have been marooned due to the flood and 125 tonnes of rice, cash Taka 5 lakh and Tk 4 lakh for cattle feed have been sanctioned for the flood victims of the district so far.

Apart from this, 1,300 packets of dried food were also distributed to the people of flood affected areas of the district, he added.

Executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Md Mokhlasur Rahman said a case has been filed with the Sadullapur Thana accusing some unidentified persons for cutting the embankment at the area.

Officer in charge of Sadullapur thana Masudur Rahman said they were trying to arrest the criminals who cut the government dyke on Wednesday and created untold sufferings to the people.
