DHAKA, Oct 9, 2020 (BSS) – Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said the government remains in power with people’s trust, not for anyone’s mercy.

“The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is administering the country with people’s trust. Awami League’s root is very deep in this soil. It remains in power with people’s love,” he told a virtual press conference on contemporary issues from his official residence on parliament premises.

About BNP leaders’ allegation that the government is giving shelter to offenders, he said AL does not give shelter to offenders for remaining in power rather it is bringing criminals to justice.

Quader said the government is taking an initiative for making the death penalty as the highest punishment for rape.

At the directives of the prime minister, he said, amendment proposal in this regard will be placed in the cabinet meeting.

Quader said the government is taking steps immediately after occurrence of any criminal activities and bringing the accused to justice.

The government carried out drives to arrest the accused in the rape incidents before anybody took to the streets for movement, he said adding that the party identity cannot be the shield for offenders to get spared from punishment.

The minister said those who took to streets in the name movement against rape but tried to divert the situation to a different direction are actually giving shelter to offenders.

BNP is carrying out their evil attempts to save the rapists and heinous criminals by announcing their movement to oust the government while demanding trial in rape incidents, he added.

Quader said BNP’s political culture is to carry out terrorist acts, killings and hatch conspiracy as the party could not earn the people’s trust.
