3 jailed for life, fined in Gopal Krishna Muhuri murder case

DHAKA, Oct 8, 2020 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has sentenced three people to life imprisonment and fined them Taka 50,000 each in the case for the murder of Nazirhat College principal Gopal Krishna Muhuri in Chittagong.

A virtual appellate division bench led by Justice Mohammad Iman Ali passed the order today.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the Appellate Division commuted the death sentence of the three accused to life imprisonment. The fine was imposed today.

The three convicts sentenced to life are- Taslim Uddin alias Montu, Azam and Alamgir Kabir alias Baitta Alamgir.

Deputy Attorney General Amit Dasgupta who represented the state in the court said, “The the Appellate Division fined the three accused Tk 50,000 each and sentenced one more year imprisonment for the non-payment of fine.”

On November 16, 2001, Nazirhat College principal Gopal Krishna Muhuri, 60, was shot dead by Jamaat-Shibir cadres at his home on Jamal Khan Road in Chittagong.

On the same day, his wife Uma Muhuri, the then audit officer of the Railways, filed a murder case with the Kotwali Police Station in Chittagong.

Following the trial, the court sentenced Nasir alias Gittu Nasir, Azam, Alamgir Kabir alias Baitta Alamgir and Taslim Uddin alias Montu to death.

Besides, the accused Mohiuddin alias Mohinuddin, Habib Khan, Saiful alias Chhota Saiful and Shahjahan were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The death reference of the case later reached the High Court.

Later, Gittu Nasir, who was sentenced to death, died in a gunfight with police. Saiful, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, also died.

After the hearing in the High Court, the death sentences of three people were upheld. However, Shahjahan and Saiful, who were sentenced to life imprisonment, were acquitted.

The rest of the sentence remained in force.

At one stage, the case came to the Appellate Division, and the verdict was announced on October 6 after hearing the appeal of the accused.
