GAIBANDHA, Oct 6, 2020 (BSS)- A total of 17,160 hectares of T Aman in four upazilas of the district have been submerged by on-going flood making the affected farmers more worried about their food security.

Department Of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources said, 1,27,200 hectares of land in all seven upazilas were brought under T-Aman paddy cultivation in the current season.

The farmers successfully completed the T- Aman farming on their land with the hopes of getting desired output against the high value crop this year.

But the sudden flood has destroyed the hopes of many farmers as 17,160 hectares of land of Palashbari, Gobindaganj, Sadullapur and Sadar upazilas went under flood water mostly come from upper catchment

The rainfall from the upstream also intensified the inundation in the upazilas causing untold sufferings to the flood victims.

Deputy Director (DD) of the DAE agriculturist Masudur Rahman said, the seedlings of T- Aman paddy would be damaged if those will remain under flood water for 8-10 days.

As the seedlings of T- Aman remains under the flood water for over a week there is every possibility of damage and there is hardly any time for transplanting the seedlings further .

Keeping this in view DAE officials are suggesting the affected farmers to get ready to farm early variety of robi crops like mustard, wheat and maize including winter vegetable on their land just after receding the flood water from their land, the DD said.

Talking to BSS, DD of the DAE Masudur Rahman said, they have visited the flood affected areas of the upazilas in last two days and asked the field level Sub Assistant Agriculture Officers to motivate the affected farmers to go for robi farming on their land without delay.

DD however, said the assessment of the crops , damaged by the flood is yet to be ascertained .
