DHAKA, Oct 5, 2020 (BSS)- Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today called upon all irrespective of opinions and party affiliations to build united social resistance against rape.

“The government is bringing offenders to justice in rape cases. But we will have to build united social resistance against such crimes,” he told journalists after a review meeting on development projects at the Secretariat here.

Quader said the government is taking actions in every rape incident as it is showing no mercy to offenders whoever they are.

Mentioning that incidents of repression on women and rape at different parts of the country are being reported in recent days, he said rape is undoubtedly a heinous crime and social disease as well.

Those who are involved with such terrible crimes possess perverted mentality, he said seeking support of all to bring such criminals to justice.

Mentioning that there is no need to do politics over all issues, he urged all political, cultural, social and voluntary organizations to become united in building social resistance against such heinous crimes like rape.

He said neighboring India is also witnessing a severe problem of rape incidents.

About the involvement of the students’ wing of the ruling party, the minister said none whoever he or she is will be spared in such heinous acts.

Quader mentioned that verdicts have been delivered in the Rifat murder case of Barguna, Nusrat murder case of Feni.

In the Abrar Fahad murder case, almost every accused was from Chhatra League but none was spared, he added.

Turning to countrywide strike of Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van Owners-Workers Coordination Council to press home their nine-point demand including an amendment to the Road Transport Act, the minister urged the council to sit in discussion after calling off the strike for the sake of the country and its economy.

Keeping goods transports captive and causing public sufferings during the coronavirus pandemic are not expected, he added.

“If the owners’ association has any logical demand, we could solve it through discussion as we did in the past. I have already talked with the home minister over the issue. He also agreed to sit,” he said.
