DHAKA, Oct 4, 2020 (BSS) – Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen today left here for Kuwait on a two-day visit carrying messages of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to new Emir of the oil-rich gulf nation.

The foreign minister left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HISA) here for Kuwait at 11 am, a foreign ministry official said here.

“I will visit Kuwait as a special envoy of our Prime Minister to convey her congratulatory message to new Kuwait Emir Sheikh Nawaf al Ahmad al Sabah,” Momen told BSS last evening.

Apart from the congratulatory message to the new Emir, the foreign minister will also convey Bangladesh Prime Minister’s condolences on the death of former Emir of Kuwait.

Dr Momen is scheduled to return home on Tuesday morning.

Kuwait’s new ruler, Sheikh Nawaf al Ahmad al Sabah, took the oath of office as the new Emir a day after his predecessor, Sheikh Sabah al Ahmad al Sabah, died in the USA.

On Thursday, Bangladesh observed one-day national mourning in respect to the memory of Kuwait’s emir, who breathed his last on Tuesday at the age of 91.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

In a condolence message, the premier said, “On behalf of the people and the Government of Bangladesh and my behalf, I am deeply shocked to learn the sad demise of His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait”.

On Friday, Foreign Minister Momen signed the condolence book kept at the Kuwait mission here on the death of Kuwait Emir.

Saying that Bangladesh lost a true friend at the death of Emir Sheikh Sabah, the foreign minister paid respect to the Emir on behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh.

“The Bangladeshi nationals living in Kuwait will remember the contribution of the Emir to the welfare of the Bangladeshi expatriates,” Momen said.
