Flood situation in Gaibandha’s Karotoa, Ghaghot river basins improves

GAIBANDHA, Oct 04, 2020 (BSS) – The overall flood situation in Karotoa river basin areas under Palashbari and Gobindaganj upazilas and Ghaghot river basin areas under Sadullapur and Sadar upazilas of the district started improving during the last 24 hours ending at 9 am today.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said the water level of the Karotoa river decreased by 11 cm and the Ghaghot river’s water declined by 16 cm during the period.

In spite of falling of water level in Karotoa and Ghaghot rivers, the Korotoa was flowing 106 cm above its danger level at Katakhali Bridge point near Gobindaganj upazila town and the Ghaghot river was flowing 2 cm above its danger mark at New Bridge road point of the district town this morning.

The swelling water of the Karotoa river flooded the Gobindaganj upazila town and all important roads, upazila health complex, upazila headquarters and other offices of the upazila, disrupting services to people.

The road communication between Gobindaganj and Dinajpur via Ghoraghat was suspended as Poschim Chourasta point of the road went under flood water.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said 13500 hectares of T-Aman paddy land in Gobindaganj upazila was submerged and the seedlings of the paddy might be damaged if it remained under flood water for more 8-10 days.
On Saturday, deputy commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin visited the flood affected Damodarpur and Kamarpara unions of Sadullapur upazila and talked to the flood hit people.

Later, the DC distributed relief materials to the 300 flood victims on the premises of upazila headquarters as the chief guest.

Upazila Chairman Shahariar Khan Biplob, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Golam Nobi Newaj, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer AKM Idris Ali and acting Upazila Project Implementation Officer Nitun Kundu accompanied the DC at that time.
