EBEK project aims to rehabilitate beggars

DHAKA, July 3, 2018 (BSS) – The government is going to include beggars in
the Ektee Bari Ektee Khamar (EBEK) project to rehabilitate them with a view
to making a beggar free country.

The EBEK project is going on across the country to make 60 lakh families
self-reliant.

Under the project, beggars will get loan in different income generating
activities including small business and cattle rearing.

As a pilot project, it has been implemented at Kishorganj upazila of
Nilphamari district. A committee named “Beggar Free Kishoreganj Upazila” was
formed on July 5, 2014. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was made head of the
committee.

Kishoreganj UNO Abul Kalam Azad said the upazila has become free from
baggers. Some 951 baggers in the upazila were identified and they were
clustered into 12 groups.

Under the project, a permanent fund was formed. Initially upazila
administration collected Taka 4,600 funds for every bagger. Every bagger get
equivalent amount of money from EBEK project. A total of Taka 36 lakh was
given loan to 12 groups.

The EBEK project official sources said, 4th amendment will be made to
include baggers in the project.

EBEK Project Director Akbar Hossain told BSS that the initiative to make a
beggar free country was taken to alleviate poverty from the country.

Baggers will be imparted training under the project and they will be given
loans.

“Initially, we have rehabilitated 900 families of Kishorganj upazila in
Nilphamari district,” he added.
