Govt’s initiatives may lead to protection of rivers, water bodies: Discussants

DHAKA, Oct 3, 2020 (BSS) – As many rivers and water bodies are defined as polluted, the initiatives that the government has taken to protect rivers, water bodies and the shipping sector, have been termed as accurate by experts at a meeting here today.

They said, though some of initiatives have been completed timely but most of the projects are running very slow.

Green Club of Bangladesh, an environmental organisation, arranged the virtual discussion titled, ‘River Protection and Development of Shipping Sector: From Bangabandhu to Sheikh Hasina’.

Chairman of naval, road, railway protection national committee Haji Mohammad Shaheed Mia presided over the programme, said a press release.

BUET Teachers’ Association President Professor Dr Mir Tariq Ali, member secretary of Unnayan Dhara Aminur Rasul Babul, Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation general secretary Chowdhury Ashikul Alam, Adi Jamuna Bachao Andolan Convenor Professor Ashek-e-Elahi, founding member secretary of Buriganga Bachao Andolon and joint general secretary of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA) Mihir Biswas, (BAPA) joint secretary and Buriganga Bachao Andolan founder member secretary Mihir Biswas, senior reporter of the daily Janakantha Rajan Bhattacharya and GCB general secretary Ashish Kumar Dey spoke at the discussion.

They urged the people to raise their voice against the pollution and said the rivers of the country have to be protected from pollution and encroachment to save the mankind and biodiversity.
